1 Degree // 2 Degrees
(Freelance Design Project, 2017)
1 Degrees was the first instalment of a two-part exhibition by the DEGREES collective (headed by Remi Roehrs), which aimed to showcase the creative work - and connections between - it's Brisbane-based, female-identifying artists, creatives and designers
This first instalment featured the predominantly hanging garments, 2d media, and projection works. The exhibition layout and use cube structures that I designed and constructed for the event were manipulated and treated to suit this.
The initial idea for the structures stemmed from the need to house hanging artworks on the Turbine Platform, which has no hanging wall space. The cubes therefore provide ample space for wall-mounted artworks, whilst also providing a large-scale and immediately identifiable way-finding mechanism for people as they enter the Brisbane Powerhouse. The ropes diverging from different points attached to the structures signify the connections between artists that have formed this exhibition, and provide a tangible connection to the Powerhouse building.
A significant challenge and design driver of this project was constructing the cubes so they were structurally sound enough to support the weight of lighting, electrical conduits and hanging artwork, rigid enough to allow people to move through and around them, whilst also being flat packable for easy transportation in a ute.
